Silo Reloaded

It’s been a long time since anything new happened on Silo 41. In fact, the last post was in May 2018 for Star Wars Legion – a game that ultimately I never got around to playing.

The whys and the wherefores for this long hiatus are many and some quite tedious, needless to say this is the first time in a long time that I’ve been able to get anywhere near the Silo.

This isn’t a grand relaunch with the aim of getting the site to the level of content and popularity of years gone by, those days a long past. Time is also a major factor. However, there will be hobby projects, the odd review and the return of some familiar faces to make Silo41 a website its readers can value once more.

To help in this endeavour two seasoned hobbyists have agreed to come onboard to write the odd post. Both will bring their unique perspectives and projects to the site. Having known them both for a number of years, it’s really exciting to have them onboard and sharing their ideas.

Meet the team

Lee – @nationoflee

Lee began the hobby in the closing days of Rogue Trader and even spent some time working in his local Games Workshop store – although on the basis he was paid in toys, there’s a good chance some child labour laws were broken. During this time he was introduced to many of the games he still plays today.

Lee’s claim to fame was receiving a painting lesson from the legendary Mike McVey and even was allowed into the Design Studio on a couple of occasions.

During his uni days Lee discovered D&D, Roleplaying and even LARP before getting back into GW systems after qualifying as a teacher and setting up a school club. With the help of fellow hobbyists and the Games Workshop School’s Alliance programme they were able to get enough models, rules and scenery together to help the children engage with the hobby.

Lee is also co-founder and Administrator of the 2D6 Lodge, a games club based in Cambridge, with over 50 members. They regularly host campaigns and tournaments and are probably best known for the A CamBridge Too Far – the world’s largest Bolt Action 2 Day tournament.

Lee’s hobby still largely focuses on Games Workshop games but plays a few other systems. Although generally Lee considers himself a hobbyist/painter over a gamer but he’s always up for some Theory Hammer too.

Jason – @Jipin

Jason’s hobby journey began with Warhammer Fantasy Battles in the mid 90s when his older brother started collecting Skaven. As happens to most of us, Jase was captivated by the miniatures and the background that brought them to life.He began collecting Dark Elves and they have been a constant part of his hobby ever since.

From there moved in to Warhammer 40k collecting more or less every army at one point or another. While he claims to be collecting Necrons, he’s not opened the Codex yet, let alone built the models, so we’re not sure it counts

More recently Jase has been focusing on board games and has been investing in lots of Kickstarter games – particularly those involving licensed IPs including Mantic’s Hellboy, Renegade Games’ Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid, and IDW Games’ Adventures.

Jason uses painting as a way to relax and while furloughed managed to paint just under 650 miniatures. Had he managed an even 1,000 he would have been so relaxed who would have transcended.

It wouldn’t be a relaunch without a giveaway. We’ve teamed up with legendary games developer, author and longtime friend of Silo 41, Gav Thorpe to give one lucky person a signed hardback copy of the Horus Hersey book: The Primarchs.
