#ODAM 12 – The Structure Show

ODAMRoundel copyThis month’s installment of everyone’s favorite international podcast coalition sees us being unusually structured. With Jason our newly appointed content manager he tries, and fails, to stop the power going to his head. Ashley is preparing for Adepticon, Phil is babbling about some foreign gathering called Salute which is either a gaming convention or a gay nightclub, and we try to understand the latest bit of nonsense to come out of Nottingham. Nate also announces an important life event, which Jason and the boys promptly mock. Par for the course, really.

As always ODAM contains adult humour and language from the start.

#ODAM 11 – Ashley Swears

ODAMRoundel copy

In the first episode of 2014 there’s no shortage of things to talk about. Hobby progress, which makes Ashley mad. Games Workshop news, which makes Ashley mad. The new Tyranids release, which makes Ashley mad. And accounting, which makes Ashley mad.

Basically this is the episode where the gang, especially Ashley, channel me. Step in to my web!

Keep listening to the very end of the episode and you’re in for a very special Ashley related treat.

As always, episodes of ODAM are intended for grown-up ears and contains adult language and content from the start.

Warsculpting: Sculpting Nurgle

It’s Jase here from the Noonhammer & ODAM podcasts. Phil has asked me to write a few articles about sculpting and so I thought I’d kick off with the Nurgle. First off if you’re still reading this you’re sick in the head. Who in their right mind would want to know how to sculpt boils, scabs and puss filled sores? What’s wrong with you? Well whatever it is, I’ve got it too.

Making Nurgle stuff is a fairly easy process. The paradox of Nurgle is that while well sculpted guts, boils and poxes look amazing on the models, just smashing a blob of green stuff on them usually doesn’t look too bad either.

I’m going to show you some simple ideas that, when grouped together will look pretty disgusting.

First up we have the recessed scab. This can be achieved with the blade of your x-acto knife by making light cuts into the surface. (1) Continue this until you have a circular pattern (2) Then with a sculpting tool, push around the edge of the circle to make it rough and irregular. (3) You can also add texture to the actual scab surface, just making some rough indents will look gross. Feel free to combine the scab with the rot I demonstrate below, that’s really disgusting!

Boils are simply made by blending a small lump of clay/putty onto the surface and smoothing it into the skin. For a typical boil, try to get the blending completely seamless, keeping in mind that it is under the surface of the skin. What gets really nasty is when you put groups of boils together. Try to vary the sizes somewhat so it looks more realistic (see below). As you get more comfortable making this foulness, experiment with stretching the skin around the edge, just a few light grooves will do the trick (see below). You’ll see in this picture that I have made a boil that erupted through the first layers of skin, but not yet popped. Once you have placed the boil, take a bladed tool and cut in around the edges, slightly flaring up to show ragged skin that broke open (see below).

Lastly and my most favourite pox to sculpt, is the Rot! This is probably the easiest one and requires the least finesse, but you really want to be careful to make sure it looks “natural”. Use a circular object (the end of a paintbrush is great) and make some round holes in the surface. You can vary the depth slightly if you like, in fact that adds to the effect nicely, so go ahead and do that. (1) Next, take a smaller round object and repeat this process, around the first set of holes, then yet again with another smaller round object. (2) Lastly, take the smallest round tool you have (not even gonna touch that one) and repeat this process yet again, this time purposefully going back over the larger holes you already made. (3) Note that I completely obscured the original holes, this is by design. Nature is rarely truly uniform, and with the unnatural Nurgle plagues, strive to hit a balance between “that looks like it could happen” and “that looks like the work of a sinister Chaos god”.

As with anything, practice makes perfect. But don’t worry if your work doesn’t look completely how you imagined it. Like I said at the start, Nurgle can look like literal crap, and yet still be exactly what you want! One last item of note. When I’m sculpting these things, especially with Nurgle, I’m thinking ahead to the painting stage. Having an idea of how you will paint this pox or that pox will really help you get a good look at your sculpting of said pox. If you have any questions please contact me at warsulptor@gmail.com.

And may Nurgle bless you and keep you.

Giving an ODAM

Regular readers will hopefully know that I along with Jason & Nate from Noobhammer, Adam from War More Radio and Ashely from Chickhammer have been working away on the Of Dice and Men Podcast.

ODAMRoundel copy

As we go into our 9th show we’ve been having a think about the show going forward into the future and beyond. We’re making a few changes which will gradually take effect over the next two or three months which will make the show better. I hasten to add not more serious, because Jase & I are still involved, just less of a bum fight.

The first step was to shut down the Of Dice and Men website. It wasn’t really serving a purpose that this site couldn’t fulfil, or pages on the websites of the other panelists. So with immediate effect that website is no more and all future episodes will be posted here instead. The episodes will just be listed on the ODAM page for now until they get something slightly prettier to look at, along with some changes to the site as a whole that are in the pipeline but that’s all hush-hush for now.

We’re also looking at more recording software to make the shows clearer and I’m also going to take a stab at recording which will give us greater freedom, take the pressure of Nate & Adam who are already so busy with their own shows and will allow me to expand The Shell Case and introduce TSC ODAM specials in which Adam and I get the other site contributors together for a couple of hours of cocking about.

We’ll also be looking at getting ODAM onto iTunes which will make it a damn sight easier for you wonderful lot to find it and hopefully reach a wider audience. Being totally ignorant to such things, I shall be exploring the hows, they whys, and the wherefores.

So lots happening and all of it good. We’ll be tackling ODAM 9 in the not too distant future so stay tuned…

Of Dice & Men – Episode 2

It’s here, episode 2! Now with 200% more content!ODAM

In episode 2 of Of Dice & Men the team talk about their hobby, wargaming blogs that have caught their eye and the importance of background in the building and playing of a game, and does poor fluff mean poor army lists?

We also learn that Jason’s mental, Adam is a deviant, Nate is in a sulk and Phil goes off on a rant. Again.

Of Dice & Men Episode 2

Of Dice and Men

I am very excited to announce that I, with the guys from Noobhammer & War More Radio are launching the Of Dice & Men Podcast. Of Dice & Men will feature the five of us as a regular panel talking about various hobby topics and our intention is to regularly feature Bloggers and Podcasters from around the world to join in the discussion and have the piss taken out of them by me and Jase. You have been warned.

This is something Jase, Nate, John, Adam and myself have been working on for some time now and we’re all eager to see how the community receives it. If you’re interested in taking part in the show then fill out the form on the Of Dice & Men page and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can. At present we’re aiming to do just one show a month – mainly due to other commitments we all have to work around – so we may not be able to get you in straight away but we’ll do what we can.

A massive thanks to Nate of Noobhammer for all his recording and editing jiggery pokery.

Anyway, without further-ado I give you the first ever episode of Of Dice & Men…
